St Francis Care Centre and Japanese community unite through art and legacy

Community members are encouraged to support the initiative.

The St Francis Care Centre is set to host a special ART Day on November 6, bringing together children, adult Hospice residents, volunteers and dignitaries in a celebration of creativity, healing and unity.

The event, taking place from 12:00 to 18:00 at the centre (30 Olivia Road), is a collaborative effort between the Japanese Embassy, the Japanese community and sponsors such as Pentel South Africa.

This day promises to be both fun-filled and meaningful, with residents and children expressing themselves through art, colour and imagination.

“It will be a joyful day where our residents, both young and old, come together to create, connect and share moments of happiness. ART Day is about more than just painting. It’s about comfort, expression and community,” said centre manager Lebo Ntjona.

The event was inspired by the enduring legacy of Fr Nicholas Nemoto, whose life of service continues to guide the centre’s mission and values.

“His spirit of compassion still lives on in everything we do,” Ntjona added.

The ART Day initiative was one of the highlights discussed during a recent visit from officials of the Japanese Embassy and members of the Japanese community. The visit reaffirmed the centre’s strong relationship with the Japanese people, a bond forged over years of collaboration and shared purpose.

“The connection we have with the Japanese community is very special. It’s deeply rooted in kindness and respect, and this event is another way to celebrate that bond,” said Ntjona.

St Francis Care Centre, known for its holistic care approach, continues to seek innovative and heartfelt ways to support its residents. ART Day is one more step in creating a space where healing happens not just through medicine, but through love, creativity and human connection.
