Sunward Christian Academy marks 25 years of making a difference

A small school with a big heart: Sunward Christian Academy celebrates 25 years of changing lives in Boksburg.

What began as a small dream in 2000 with just over 30 learners and four teachers has grown into one of Boksburg’s most beloved Christian schools.

This year, Sunward Christian Academy celebrated its 25th birthday, marking not just years of teaching, but a legacy of faith, family and community service.

The school’s principal, Leon van der Westhuizen, says the milestone is a testament to God’s grace and the vision of his father, Pastor Jan van der Westhuizen, who founded the school a quarter of a century ago.

“There were just over 30 learners and four staff members when the school was established. Today, we have over 375 learners from Grade R to Grade 12. My dad led the school until I took over about ten years ago. We’ve come a long way, but the heart of the school remains the same.”

A family, not just a school
Deputy principal Mariette Prinsloo describes Sunward Christian Academy as more than an academic institution.

“It’s a miracle, truly. We’ve seen children from very humble beginnings go on to do incredible things. Many still stay in touch with their teachers long after matric. We’re a family here. God is central to everything we do.”

Prinsloo shared one of the school’s proudest success stories: a learner who arrived in Grade Seven without parents and was given a full bursary. “He matriculated here and has gone on to great success. Stories like his remind us why we do what we do,” she said.

A heart for service
Beyond academics, the school has made its mark through a range of community outreach projects.

For the past six years, Sunward Christian Academy has run an Adopt-a-Granny initiative, supporting 12 elderly residents from the SAVF Kova Pienaar Home with monthly care packages and festive hampers at Christmas.

Learners also take part in Project Duduza, where they provide schoolbags filled with supplies to underprivileged Grade One pupils, and host an annual Christmas party for them on campus.

The school even takes its giving spirit to the streets literally, by repairing potholes in the local Parkrand Village area, hosting blood drives, and teaching learners “the principle of giving.”

“We want to show our learners that giving is part of living. It’s about sowing and reaping, values that go far beyond the classroom.”

A legacy of excellence
In its 25 years, the school has proudly maintained a 100% matric pass rate, with teachers who, according to Prinsloo, “are truly a blessing”.

Each year, the school selects a theme to guide learners’ personal growth. This year’s was Facing the Giant, encouraging pupils to overcome challenges and step into their purpose.

“Our goal is to prepare learners to be successful, grounded adults who can make a difference in the world,” said Van der Westhuizen.

“We’re not done making an impact. Our next 25 years will be even greater.”

A celebration of gratitude
The school marked its silver jubilee with a Thanksgiving service on September 18 at Word & Life Church, a celebration of “25 years of grace and foresight”. The festivities continued with a special golf day fundraiser at the Benoni Country Club recently.

As a private school that receives no government subsidies, fundraising remains vital to its sustainability, but the sense of community keeps it thriving.

“Through faith, family, and the unwavering support of our community, we’ve built something lasting.”
