Atlasville substation blast: Technicians implement temporary contingency plans

The city has urged residents to remain patient, adding that there is currently no estimated time for full restoration.

Municipal technicians are racing to restore electricity to large parts of Boksburg after thousands of homes and businesses were plunged into darkness following the explosion at the Atlasville substation at 03:00.

The affected areas include Impala Park, Witkoppie Ridge, Bardene, Bartlett, Beyerspark, Ravenswood, and the surrounding areas.
Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed that preliminary findings indicated possible tampering with the energy equipment, probably by cable thieves, as the cause of the explosion.
Dlamini said technical teams carried out an assessment and were working to safely isolate the substation for detailed inspections and repair work.

To minimise the impact of the outage, the team is working to restore electricity to the affected areas by supplying them through other local grids.

This mission temporarily switched off additional areas to allow the process.
These areas include Comet, Plantation, Dayangle, Morganridge, Jansen Park, Ravenswood, Boksburg West, and Jan Smutsville.

The metro added that there is currently no estimated time for full restoration, as this will only be determined after the extent of the damage has been fully assessed.
The city has urged residents to remain patient, adding that further updates will be communicated as repair efforts progress.

Repairs are underway at the Atlasville substation after explosion left large parts of Boksburg without electricity this morning.
