The SANBS calls on communities to roll up their sleeves this festive season

The SANBS urges South Africans to give the gift that saves lives.

While South Africans celebrate, travel and raise a toast to the year that was, the demand for blood does not take a holiday.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is urging the public to “paint the city red” this festive season by rolling up their sleeves and donating blood to help save lives.

With increased travel on the roads and hospitals under added pressure, the need for blood remains constant throughout December. A single blood donation can save up to three lives, making it one of the most meaningful gifts South Africans can give this festive season; no wrapping, no price tag, just life-changing impact.

As the year draws to a close, the SANBS thanked every blood donor, partner and supporter who contributed to making 2025 a year of hope and healing.

Through their generosity, the nation’s blood supply has remained stable, allowing thousands of patients to spend holidays, reach milestones and share special moments with their loved ones.

The SANBS encourages donors, regular and first-time, to keep the spirit of giving alive by donating blood during the festive period. By doing so, South Africans can help ensure that blood is available when needed most, offering patients not only treatment, but hope.

Donors must meet these minimum criteria:
• Weigh at least 50kg;
• Be aged between 16 and 65;
• Be in good health;
• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle;
• Consider their blood safe for transfusion.
