SCHOLAR TRANSPORT PROTEST: Avoid these areas around Delmore

Parents and learners say the prolonged non-payment of transport operators has severely disrupted schooling and undermined children’s right to education.

Motorists are urged to avoid several major roads in and around Delmore Gardens, Delmore Park, and nearby informal settlements following a protest by learners and their parents over ongoing school transport disruptions.

The protest is linked to the government’s apparent failure to pay scholar transport service providers, allegedly for several months already. As a result, bus operators have withheld their services, leaving hundreds of learners without transport to school.

Protesters have blockaded affected roads using rocks, tree branches, and other objects, bringing traffic to a standstill in some areas. They have vowed not to leave the protest sites until a representative from the relevant government department arrives to address their concerns.

The following roads are currently affected:

  • Commissioner Street in Delmore, as well as Lower Boksburg Road
  • Wit Deep Road (entire stretch)
  • Main Reef Road, near Main Road in Witfield
