UPDATE: Boksburg court to rule on bail in major child abuse material case
Authorities allege that one of the suspects drugged and sexually assaulted his wife over a period of time, recording and distributing the material without her consent.
The two men, one from Boksburg and the other from Germiston, who are accused of offences related to child sexual abuse material, are awaiting judgment on their bail application following legal arguments between the defence and the State in what is considered a high-profile case.
Both accused have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance on May 4, when the court is expected to deliver a ruling on bail.
The defence and the prosecution concluded their arguments on April 23, after which the matter was postponed to May 4 for judgment.
The suspects, who are known to each other, face charges including sexual assault, as well as the possession, production and distribution of child sexual abuse material. Accused number two also faces an additional charge relating to the possession of unlicensed firearms.
Investigations into the matter are continuing.
Background to the case
The two men were arrested on March 27 during a coordinated operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Boksburg and Germiston.
The arrests followed an intelligence-driven investigation into alleged drug-facilitated sexual abuse and the distribution of child sexual abuse material.
The investigation was initiated following a tip-off from the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency and involved collaboration with SAPS’ Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations Unit and US Homeland Security Investigations.
Authorities allege that one of the suspects drugged and sexually assaulted his wife over a period of time, recording and distributing the material without her consent. Electronic devices were seized during the arrests as part of the investigation.
