Passion for education

With a rich background in education of 26 years, I have had the privilege of shaping young minds and fostering a love for learning.

Sonja Janse van Rensburg, who was recently appointed as the new operational head of the primary school at Curro Academy Parkdene, believes in a holistic approach in education.

From a young age, Sonja found joy in sharing knowledge with others – whether it was teaching insects in the garden, her brothers or friends.

“This innate desire to educate led me to pursue my teaching studies at North West University, where I graduated cum laude.

“My first teaching post at a small school in Mpumalanga was a baptism by fire, but it was also an incredible opportunity to learn and grow. With a small team of teachers, I had to wear many hats, and this experience laid the foundation for my future success.”

Sonja said as her career progressed, so did her passion for teaching and learning.

“I was appointed as head of department, a role I served in both the public and private sectors, honing my management and leadership skills.

“In 2018, I made the move to the private sector, and it was the best decision I ever made. Two years later, I completed my Post Graduate diploma in Educational Management and Leadership, again graduating cum laude.
“Today, I am proud to say that I am pursuing my Master’s degree in Educational Management and Leadership, a testament to my unwavering commitment to education,” she said.

Sonja said she is thrilled to join this vibrant community and lead a dedicated team committed to providing exceptional education.

“With a rich background in education of 26 years, I have had the privilege of shaping young minds and fostering a love for learning.

“I am passionate about a holistic approach to education, believing every child’s unique needs and talents should be nurtured.

“As a mother of four and grandmother of two, I understand the importance of creating a supportive environment where children can grow and thrive.”

Sonja said she is confident in her ability to contribute to the school’s success.

“Living in Boksburg from 2016 to 2019 has given me a deep understanding of this community, and I am excited to re-join and make a meaningful impact,” said Sonja, who is married to the SuperSport rugby commentator, John.

Sonja said they strive to create a nurturing environment that fosters a sense of belonging, safety, and inclusivity, allowing students to grow and learn without boundaries.
