The sad state of our parks, pavements
Besides the fact that the unkempt parks and pavements are unsightly, it poses a danger too
Kerry Coetzer, of Boksburg, writes:
I read with sadness the story of Jacques Leroy who was killed by a swarm of bees while mowing grass in the park across his house.
Why did he feel the need to trim this grass in the first place? The answer is simply that the municipality has failed to do so itself. And so the blame should be laid at the metro’s feet.
We cannot be expected to wait and wait for the municipality to turn up one day and do their job. Besides the fact that the unkempt parks and pavements are unsightly, it poses a danger too. The grass in the parks in Impala Park is so long that you will not see someone hiding in it until it is too late.
Weed control on the roadsides around parks is not carried out on a regular basis.
We are told that we must not cut the municipal trees. I would have to agree as it is the job of the municipality to maintain what is theirs. Some of the trees in the parks have not been trimmed for many years.
“We are only left with the option to trim them ourselves to get rid of eyesores on our doorsteps.
Again the vegetation growth springing out at the base of these trees is a very good hiding place for criminals. Where are the teams of municipal workers that used to line our streets? People need work so desperately.
Boksburg can definitely do better.
