Steenkamp fails to reach finals, sights still set on future glory

Boksburg Athletic Club seems to have a real star in Tiaan Steenkamp.

The 17-year-old high jumper might only have finished 13th at the recent World Youth Championships that took place in Donetsk, Ukraine, but more great things are expected of this aspiring athlete.

Tiaan’s bets jump was 2.07m, but this was unfortunately not good enough to get him into the group of 12 finalists after the qualifying rounds.

The winning jump in the final was 2.20m.

Tiaan cleared 2.03m four times over the course of the last year.

He set the target of reaching the Youth Championships with his trainer Sonette Sanders last year, after clearing 1.95m to earn a bronze medal at the Southern Regions Championships in Zimbabwe.

The youngster then began to dazzle with the heights he cleared.

Tiaan did also clear 2.07m while competing for his school EG Jansen at the Super 16 – Super Inter High in Germiston, in February.

He jumped 1.95m in extremely windy conditions when he won the South African Championships in East London.

Then he jumped 2.05m at the SA Club Championships.

At a meeting in Potchefstroom in May, he jumped 2.1m.
