St Dom’s water polo trio invited to Olympics training squads
St. Dom's aquatic triumvirate encouraged to shine
St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls learners Kiara Schutte, Oluchi McMurray and Gabriella Teixeira have been selected for the 2021 and 2024 Olympics training squads.
This was made official when Swimming South Africa (SSA) recently announced its squads as the country’s aquatics team prepares for the biggest stage of the sport in both next year’s and 2024 Olympic Games.
Squad selections are based on performances at SSA tournaments and training camps, and for the junior and youth teams, performances at the Schools Water Polo South Africa (SWPSA) tournaments.
Schutte was selected for the national senior squad, while McMurray and Teixeira were selected for the junior squad.
“Congratulations to the girls,” said St Dominic’s head of aquatics department Wade Marshall.
“They must reach for the stars and the sky is the limit.”
According to SSA, the objectives for the squad system include:
• To identify athletes who will deliver improved performances at international competitions and at the 2021 and 2024 Olympic Games.
• To identify and develop talented black water polo players who will deliver an essential performance at all levels of international competitions.
• To facilitate support services to identified South African-based athletes.
• To ensure exposure to international participation to increase the pool of elite level athletes, with a view to enhancing performances.
• To ensure the future makeup of our teams is representative of the demographics of the country.
