EG Jansen rugby coach left impressed following school clinic
EG Jansen strengthens its rugby
Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen director of rugby Rudi Dames was left an impressed man when rugby boys from all corners of Ekurhuleni showcased some promise and potential at the school on November 28.
This follows after the school hosted a rugby clinic for boys u-10, 11, 12 and 13 for all those who are interested in honing their rugby skills.
The clinic was particularly important for the u-13 group, of whom most will be attending the school next year. The day allowed them to familiarise themselves with the coaches and facilities at the school.
Speaking about the meeting, Dames said he was confident of the future of the game.
“I was very impressed,” he enthused.
“I think there’s a lot of talent in the East Rand. One of the more important reasons we hosted the clinic is to make sure we keep our talent in the East Rand,” he explained, before hinting that the school will be opening a rugby institute as part of the bigger plan of ensuring the future of local rugby is taken care of.
The Advertiser will report broadly on the EG rugby institute as soon as all of the information is available.
The clinic, which was presided by well-respected coaches of the game, was divided into four categories: catch and pass, defensive drills, testing in the gym and aerial skills.
Dames and former Lions u-19 and 21 coach Herkie Kruger coached in the catch-and-pass class, defensive drills were headed by former Springbok defensive coach John McFarlan and Lions Super Rugby player Pieter Jansen.
Elsewhere, testing in the gym was taken care of by conditioning coach Dirk Odendaal, while aerial skills were taught by University of Pretoria Varsity Cup coach Nico Luus and Reghardt Botha.
The rugby institute will also accommodate every boy who is serious about rugby and not just limited for players linked with the school. According to Dames, it will accommodate ages u-8 to u-13.
