Meeting to revitalise sports in Reiger Park

Reiger Park’s interim sports committee invites all sporting codes, federations, school sports co-ordinators and interested parties to a meeting to revive sports development in the area on April 20.

According to the committee, the meeting will include a brainstorming session to come up with ideas to revitalise sports after it was affected by the lockdown implemented two years ago.

“Reiger Park was a strong sporting community but due to lack of participation, we are only left with soccer and rugby as the dominant sporting codes,” said the committee’s co-ordinator, Leonard Plaatjies.

Following a brainstorming meeting between the committee and a few bodies last month, it was established that greater public participation was needed to help grow sports in the area.

“On March 30, a brainstorming session was initiated with a few sports codes, who also formed part of the pre-lockdown interim committee.

“But the urgent need was raised to involve as many codes, bodies, schools and structures in Reiger Park as possible.”

The committee furthermore added the community needs unity between sports federations so that there could be a formal structure that will assist the youth.

“The need to reformulate the body in order to revitalise, unite and grow sports and sports development was raised earlier this year after the countrywide lockdown almost crippled sports and sports development.

“We need a structure that assist youngsters, sports enthusiasts and the general public to jointly gain from the benefits of sports in the community.”
