Mixed sports event raises money for Blues

The club is in desperate need of sponsors.

The Boksburg Football Club also known as the Blues played a mini-tournament with other different sporting codes on May 2 at the Boksburg Stadium in aid of their players.

The objective of the initiative was to raise funds to pay for the players’ T-shirts, water bottles and travel costs.

The club set a target of raising R26 000, but the amount raised was only R3 430.

The Blues is one of the oldest clubs in Boksburg, but they have been experiencing financial challenges.

Co-owner and founder of H2C-Weconnect and u-15 coach Heinrich Loxton from the Blues said that the event was also an opportunity to bring all sporting codes together to uplift the community through sports.

“H2C-Weconnect, East Rand United Rugby Club and Reiger Park Cricket Club were also part of this event. The idea was to play a mini soccer tournament among the three sporting codes and also feature a supporters team that includes parents, fans and coaches,” said Loxton.

The coach said soccer legends such as Willem Jackson and Martin Carelse wanted to join the fund-raiser as they thought it was a good initiative.

Media liaison officer at the club, Mmapula Thambo, said it would be great if they can get sponsors.

“The club gets funds from parents and sometimes it is hard for them to provide us with all the necessary things the club needs and it is for that reason that we organised this initiative.

“It would have been nice if the community came in large numbers, but I understand that it was our first attempt and we are planning to host more events like this. We will explore all opportunities to raise funds for the club,” said Thambo.
