Parkrand dojo rakes in the bling
Discipline and dedication is setting these athletes on the course of success.
Goju Karate Academy finished on top during the World Union of Karate Federations (WUKF) Gauteng Championships on February 1.
Taking to the mats at the Brakpan Indoor Sport Centre, 26 athletes from the Parkrand-based dojo along with nine other affiliated dojos competed to claim top honours.
The club took home a whopping 105 medals, 39 gold, 33 silver and 33 bonze, followed by Ryukyu Karate Dojo, which bagged 35 medals.
Karateka from the dojo also placed among the tournament’s top three, racking up the highest scores for the day.
Niara-Ze Magoo won three gold and two silver, scoring a total of 436 points.
Following closely in second place was teammate, Riley Madgewick winning three golds, one silver and one bronze.
She finished the day with a score of 424.
With a score of 400, Johrné Theron claimed the third overall place, winning one gold, three silver and one bronze.
Aden Jansen, Nicolas Costa, Samantha-Lee Knoop, Gareth Hird and Natalia Killian also placed among the top ten.
