Dojo secures fifth place at nationals
Athletes now have their sights set on competing internationally.
In poised stances and masterfully planned strikes, athletes of the Goju Karate Academy, Parkrand, placed fifth overall at the 2025 World Union of Karate-Do Federations (WUKF) SA National Championships and Afro-Asia Open, held in Gqebera, from April 4 to 6.
Thirty-eight athletes from the local dojo took to the mats competing against 775 others from 21 different style federations, across four countries.
Bagging a total of 54 medals, 17 gold, 21 silver and 16 bronze, fourth dan instructor, sensei Tarryn Madgwick said the Goju team is incredibly proud of their students’ achievements.
“It was a tough competition and the bar was set high,” she said.
“With their WUKF SA Martial Arts South Africa (MASA) Gauteng Colours in hand, our dedicated athletes are tightening their belts in preparation for the WUKF World Karate and Kobudo Championships in Malmo, Sweden in July.”
