Witfield Tennis Club Championship wraps up

One of the tournament's highlights was Zander de Jager, who maintained his dominance by winning the men’s singles title for the fourth year in a row.

After months of powerful serves and fierce competition, the 2025 Witfield Tennis Club Championship has officially come to a close.

Since the tournament began on April 19, players across all divisions showcased not only skill and endurance but also true sportsmanship.

This year’s championship saw a dynamic shift, with several new names etching themselves into club history. Alta Macdonald emerged as the new ladies’ singles champion, while Wendy Bath and Janet Ristic claimed victory in the ladies’ doubles.

In the mixed doubles, Donovan van Rooyen and Miora van Heerden lifted the trophy, overcoming strong opponents Doreen Dobson and Ryno Potgieter, who finished as runners-up.

A changing of the guard took place in the men’s open doubles, as long-time champions were unseated by Leon van der Sandt and Donovan van Rooyen. Meanwhile, in the men’s over-40 doubles, Leon van der Sandt partnered with Jakes de Jager to take the title.

The over-60 category also saw fresh champions in Izak Peerson and John Smallcombe, with Cyril Gillmer and Pieter van der Merwe finishing as runners-up.

One of the tournament’s standout stories was Zander de Jager, who continues his reign as men’s singles champion for the fourth consecutive year. Donovan van Rooyen put up a strong fight as runner-up, while Leon van der Sandt finished second in the men’s singles over-40.

Runners-up in the ladies’ doubles were Miora van Heerden and Doreen Dobson, and Ryno Potgieter and John Smallcombe took second place in the men’s doubles over-40.

The club also recognised the efforts of chairperson Dr Cyril Gillmer, whose commitment kept the tournament running smoothly despite ongoing challenges, including vandalism and even a car crashing through the club wall. His leadership, persistence, and passion for the game are deeply appreciated by all.

“To every player, supporter, and volunteer – thank you for making this year’s championship one to remember. Here’s to the love of the game and the promise of an even bigger 2026 season.”
