Be a Sport: Your donations went a long way

Thanks to the Be a Sport drive, young athletes across Boksburg are game-ready and smiling.

Cricket bats, netball balls, hockey sticks and boxing gloves found new homes this Mandela Month, as the Boksburg Advertiser’s Be a Sport project brought sports equipment directly to those who need it most.

From primary schools to local clubs, the donations- ranging from tekkies to full cricket kits- were recently handed over, giving athletes across Boksburg a reason to smile and the tools to chase their sporting dreams.

Launched in celebration of Mandela Month, the initiative called on the public to donate new or gently used sporting gear to benefit local schools, clubs and non-profits in need. As always, the Boksburg community responded with generosity and heart.

Among the beneficiaries was the Hashtag 100 Cricket League, which received vital cricket equipment to help support the club.

Gerald Pretorius, a Boksburg resident, also received a full cricket kit for his 10-year-old son.

Local schools also benefited – Lakeside Primary School and Laerskool Goudrand each received a variety of items, including hockey equipment, netball balls and tekkies.

Hoërskool Voortrekker was gifted two hockey sticks and a netball ball.

Even combat sports weren’t left out — Godfather MMA, a local mixed martial arts gym, received training gear including boxing gloves and kickboxing equipment.

The Be a Sport campaign officially wrapped up on July 31, closing off a month of heartfelt giving. The Advertiser extends a special thanks to Ward 22 Clr Madelaine Muller, who played a key role through a generous donation made in partnership with SNT Sports.

The Advertiser also appreciates the involvement of partner schools Laerskool Concordia, Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen and Laerskool Baanbreker, whose support helped facilitate donations.

Nelson Mandela once said, “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.” This year’s Be a Sport campaign stood as proof of that belief- showing that, in Boksburg, sport continues to bring people together and change lives.
