Boksburg Amateur Wrestling Club rakes in medals at champs
With this impressive showing on the national stage, the club continues to raise the bar in youth wrestling and looks ahead to future competitions.
The Boksburg Amateur Wrestling Club (BAWC) delivered a remarkable performance at the recent South African Wrestling Federation (SAWF) National Youth, President, and Greco-Roman Championships, held in Pretoria recently.
Over the course of the three-day event, BAWC wrestlers collected a total of five gold, one silver, and six bronze medals, competing against some of the country’s top young talent. Their efforts further cement BAWC’s reputation as one of the leading wrestling clubs in Gauteng.
The tournament kicked off with the Youth Freestyle category, drawing a field of 544 participants. BAWC entered 14 wrestlers and made an impressive start, bringing home three gold medals, one silver, and three bronze. Jean Le Roux, Ruben Van Rooyen and Keanu Bisschoff each topped their divisions to claim gold. Kadin Botha secured silver, while Hanré Dercksen, Michiel Botha and Sibusiso Jele all earned bronze. Franco Van Rooyen narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth, with Josua Van Tonder placing fifth.
Participation certificates were awarded to DC Compion, Keagan James, Jeanru Lombard, Marchant Botha and Michael Le Roux, acknowledging their hard work and competitive spirit.
On the second day, during the President’s category which featured 408 entries, seven BAWC wrestlers took to the mats. Keanu Bisschoff added to his medal tally with another gold medal, while Josua Van Tonder, Michiel Botha and Ruben Van Rooyen each walked away with bronze. Marchant Botha and Melusi Maxhayt both fought valiantly to finish fifth in their respective divisions. Sibusiso Jele and Melusi Maxhayt were also recognised with participation certificates.
The final day of the championships featured the Greco-Roman event, attracting 420 wrestlers. Representing BAWC solo in this category, Kadin Botha delivered a dominant performance to secure the club’s fifth gold medal of the tournament.
The club has extended its gratitude to the parents and families who supported the team throughout the championship, crediting their encouragement and presence as key contributors to the athletes’ success.
