Mamepe Striders middle-distance runner Lefa Kwanele is appealing to the community for financial support after receiving a life-changing opportunity to further both his athletics career and his studies in the United States.

The talented runner from Langaville in Tsakane, who has enjoyed a breakthrough 2026 season, has been invited to join a high-performance cross-country and track and field programme under respected coach Chayse McCullough at Colby Community College, where he will also continue his education.

Kwanele has emerged as one of Mamepe Striders’ most improved athletes this year. He has lowered his personal best to under 33 minutes over 10km in both road running and cross-country.

Describing the opportunity as a dream come true, Kwanele admitted his first reaction was one of disbelief.

“The first thing that went through my mind was, ‘Is this true?’ I felt grateful, a bit in disbelief and really motivated. I’ve watched the programme and what coach Chase builds with his athletes, so getting that message felt like validation for all the early mornings, sacrifices and hard work,” he said.

“Right after that came excitement. I immediately started thinking about how much I could learn and how I could contribute to the team.”

Kwanele believes the move will elevate him both on and off the track.

“This is a massive opportunity for me. As an athlete, training under coach Chase and being part of a high-performance programme will push me to a level I haven’t reached yet. The structure, competition and coaching will help me improve my times, discipline and mental toughness.”

He added that the chance to study while competing makes the opportunity even more meaningful.

“Sport teaches me time management and resilience, and I want to use that same discipline in the classroom. This opportunity means I don’t have to choose between my passion and my education – I get to grow in both at the same time.”

McCullough said he expects Kwanele to strengthen their distance running programme and contribute to the team’s continued success.

Despite securing the opportunity, Kwanele still faces the financial hurdle of travelling to the United States.
