Jack Ryan takes on his first nemesis – movie review

Jack Ryan is a character who has been with us for quite some time.

Reviewer: Leandi Cameron.

Film: Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

Genre: Action.

Rating: Slow starter, but filled suspense and explosive action.

In this film, Chris Pine stars in the title role as Jack Ryan, becoming the fourth actor to play Ryan, following Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, based on the bestseller series by Tom Clancy.

As a marine, injured on duty, Ryan is recruited as a CIA agent and is placed in Wall Street, as an analyst. He soon uncovers a plot by a Russian oligarch, plotting to collapse the US economy.

Ryan travels to Russia, and this is when his comfy office job transforms into that of an operational field agent, where his life and that of his love, Cathy (Keira Knightley), are threatened.

But, with his marine training, Ryan soon shows that he has skills even greater than he realised.

It becomes a race towards saving Cathy and the US, and his nemesis does not make this easy for him.

The film is a slow starter, and takes a while to grip you, but in the end turns out to have high-impact action, with a lot of suspense and gun-slinging.

Otherwise, the film is quite enjoyable and Pine completely embraces the Jack Ryan character.
