Watch: Bull breaks free at Limpopo auction… what happens next?

A Bonsmara bull took 'giving it horns' literally, staging a rare escape from an auction ring. Find out what might have spooked the animal and what happened next.

Social media is lighting up with reactions after a bull at an auction in Limpopo ‘gave it horns’.

The expression, which means to do something with extra energy or intensity, was given a literal meaning when a Bonsmara bull made a great escape on Friday.

A video posted by Wimi Sada Feeds on Facebook, which has already been shared on several other Facebook and social media accounts, shows the moment the bull, which is said to be approximately three years old, made an enthusiastic entrance into the auction ring on the farm Doornpan in Roedtan. It subsequently broke through the barrier and landed among the tables and people.

Caxton Local Media contacted Kobus du Toit, the chairperson of the Vlakte Bonsmara Group, which hosted the auction. He says that while what happened was unusual, it was no big deal.

“The bull walked out of the hall after escaping the ring. No one was injured, and the bull was sold afterwards, not going through the ring again.”

Du Toit explains that all cattle were screened the day before. “The animal must have gotten a huge fright when he entered the ring. [This is] the first incident of that sort in our 20-year existence as a study group, and after more than 50 auctions.”

He says the bull was easily herded back to his pen outside the auction hall and that it didn’t show any signs of aggression.

“[It] must have been the noise of the auctioneer’s speaker and the slightly darker hall that triggered him. A big fuss was made on social media, but we have already forgotten the incident, and the auction went well with a 100% sale record,” he concludes.
