Speedsters could lose licences

Thirty-one Brakpan drivers may have their driving licences suspended,if the court decides that the reasons they advanced for exceeding the speed limit are unacceptable.

Speed operations conducted in the mornings between Tuesday (August 20) and Monday (August 26), in various hotspots, resulted in 31 drivers being arrested and 89 being issued with fines.

“The EMPD reminds motorists that if they are arrested for excessive speed and the court considers their reasons lame, they may, as first offenders, may have their driving licences suspended for six months or be slapped with fines of between R2 000 and R8 000,” said Wilfred Ksago, spokesperson for the EMPD.

He added that second offenders might have to do without driving licences for a period of five years.

All the speedsters arrested were released on bail and are expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrates Court soon, to face reckless and negligent driving charges.

Meanwhile, 117 drivers were issued with fines for failing to produce their driver’s licences, with 33 drivers booked for not having valid professional driving permits.

Four drivers were arrested on warrants for unpaid traffic fines; four were fined for disregarding red robots; 57 for defective brakes, tyres and lights; 11 for failing to display number plates; 37 for registration and licensing offences; 19 for disregarding stop and yield signs; 13 for failing to fasten safety-belts and another 13 for parking and stopping offences.
