According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, police were patrolling the area at about 10.50pm when they came across a silver Audi A4, parked along 12th Road.
“The members thought the car was stuck in the mud and wanted to assist the occupants, two males and one female,” said Joubert.
“When the driver of the Audi saw the police vehicle he started to drive away, but the members ordered him to stop.”
The trio then abandoned the car and fled on foot.
“The members searched the vehicle and found bloodstains,” said Joubert.
“When they opened the boot, they found the body of a man.”
Further investigations revealed that the man was from Soshanguve, near Pretoria, and that he was the owner of the vehicle.
He had sustained an open wound to the back of his head and police found an axe, as well as a two litre bottle containing petrol, in the car.
“At this stage the motive for the attack is unknown and no arrests have been made,” added Joubert.
A case of murder has been opened at the Brakpan Police Station.
