EMPD nabs 28 reckless drivers

A speed enforcement operation conducted by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department's Speed Unit, in Brakpan, last week, resulted in the arrest of 28 drivers.

The operation was conducted along the R554, between 5.30am and 11am, on Wednesday and Thursday.

A 33-year-old woman, who claimed she was late for work, clocked the highest speed at 129km/h in a 80km/h zone.

The other arrested drivers were nabbed travelling at speeds between 120km/h and 125km/h.

“Charges of reckless and negligent driving were laid against all the speedsters at the Brakpan Police Station, all of whom were later released on bail of R500 each,” said EMPD spokesperson Supt Vusi Mabanga.

“They are expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrates Court soon.”

Another arrest followed on Sunday, when a 24-year-old man was arrested for speeding along Main Reef Road, near the Weltevreden Landfill Site.

“He was driving at 132km/h in a 60km/h zone,” said Mabanga.
