Ekurhuleni opens talks with LGBTI community

The growing number of reported cases of human rights violation and discriminatory acts towards Ekurhuleni residents who are Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender and Intersexual (LGBTI) will be addressed at the LGBTI outreach programme in Germiston, today (Saturday).

The city’s Health and Social Development Department saw a need to open a dialogue with the LGBTI community on how to address the social issues of correctional rape, homophobia, sexual health and discuss preventative measures on how to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.

“The LGBTI outreach programme is designed to emphases the city’s zero approach to discrimination and stigmatisation,” said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

“This will be done by re-enforcing the understanding of human rights and openly speaking about specific HIV/AIDS risks, and exposing the LGBTI community to the prevention measures available at our health facilities.”

The event will have an array of speakers who will talk about the meaning of human rights, access to justice, and prevention of new HIV and TB infection.

Amongst the speakers will be a LGBTI representative, who will speak about the social challenges experienced by the LGBTI community.

The event will take place from 9am until 3pm, in the Victoria Hall at Germiston Lake.
