Still in love after 60 years
Brakpan couple, Ben (79) and Muriel (80) Robinson, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary yesterday (April 21).
The two met each other in Brakpan, through a family member, and, after seeing each other for six months, they decided to tie the knot.
They married on April 21, 1955, in the Assembly of God Church in Brakpan.
“Marriage is not an easy journey. You have to work at love to make it work,” said Ben.
“You also have to know how to give and take.”
Ben and Muriel also added that what made their marriage last so long was not being selfish with their interests.
“We share a similarity in thought and in interests,” said Muriel.
“Therefore, you get to spend time with each other, rather than being apart.”
“We love to travel and have travelled all over South Africa, and even to Monte Carlo in Monaco.”
Ben was rewarded with the trip to Monte Carlo because he was the best sales manager at the company where he used to work as a radio technician.
Muriel used to work in the offices of the State Mines, which closed many years ago, and later she worked for Shell.
The couple lived in Johannesburg after they were married, but moved back to Brakpan where they are still living happily.
Ben and Muriel don’t have children so they celebrated their anniversary quietly together.
“We will just keep it simple. I’m thinking of buying her some lovely flowers and then just have dinner together,” said Ben on Monday.
