Robber faces jail time after stealing phone and cash

A 33-year-old man, who was found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances, was recently sentenced to five years imprisonment.

Oupa Magoba (33) was one of two men who robbed a taxi driver of his cellphone and R280 on May 10, 2014.

The taxi driver had stopped along Ergo Road at about 3.30pm, when he was approached by two men armed with weapons.

They took his cellphone and cash, and fled the scene.

A police vehicle in the vicinity was alerted to the robbery and the pair was arrested and a firearm was seized.

The other accused, Zweli Nkosi (25), was found guilty of armed robbery earlier this year and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, two years of which were suspended for five years.

Magoba, who appeared in court in Tsakane, was also declared unfit to poses a firearm.

The investigating officer in the case was Det Sgt Sibusiso Xaba.
