Motorists should be vigilant

The Brakpan SAPS issued a warning to motorists to be vigilant, after many smash-and-grab cases were recently reported at the police station.

Most of the incidents took place in Goods Road, close to the bridge, and in Station Road, usually at the corner of Station and Voortrekker roads.

“These crimes are not really planned, but the robber sees he has the chance and takes it,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander.

“Putting your handbag or other belongings on the seats of your car or in full view of anyone outside the car is an invitation to these smash-and-grabbers.”

On Thursday, last week, at about 4.30pm, Const Bhekokwakhe Sibandi and Const Toka Gavade were busy with patrol duties.

At the corner of Station Road and Voortrekker Road they noticed two suspicious-looking people and stopped and searched them.

Equipment that can be used for smash-and-grabs, as well as car breaking implements, were found on them.

The suspects, aged 21 and 33, were arrested for possession of car breaking implements and appeared in the Brakpan Magistrates Court on Monday.
