Robbers kick off the festive season with a bang

The robbers, who were armed with AK-47 rifles, bombed an ATM and drop safe at the Sherwood Shopping Centre.

Six armed robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after bombing an ATM and drop safe in Brakpan North, during the early hours of this morning (Tuesday).

According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, the robbers, who were armed with AK-47 rifles, arrived at the Sherwood Gardens Shopping Centre at about 12.42am.

“They used explosives to bomb an ATM at the entrance of Pick n Pay and the drop safe inside the Engen filling station,” he said.

The robbers fled in an unknown white vehicle.

Joubert told the Herald that police screened the scene for evidence and seized an amount of torn, but usable banknotes.

“The notes were handed in at the Brakpan Police Station for evidence, as well as explosives residue,” he added.

The Organised Crime Unit is investigating.
