Vehicle-bumping hijackers strike

A Brakpan couple was hijacked after their car was bumped from behind by another vehicle.

The couple was travelling along Heidelberg Road at about 8pm, on Saturday, last week, when the hijackers struck.

According to information received from Brakpan police, the man and his wife were stationary at the traffic lights at the intersection of Heidelberg and New Kleinfontein roads, when a white Volkswagen Polo bumped into the back of their red Audi Q5.

The man turned left into New Kleinfontein Road and pulled over to inspect the damage.

The Polo followed and stopped behind the Audi.

Three men alighted the Polo and threatened the man with a gun.

He was searched and robbed of his cellphone, wristwatch, wedding ring and wallet.

His wife was told to get out of the car and was robbed of her jewellery.

The hijackers then got into the Audi and fled, heading towards Benoni.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, told the Herald that hijackers may stage a minor accident to get their victims out of the vehicle.

“If your vehicle is bumped from behind and you don’t feel comfortable with the person involved, rather drive to the nearest police station,” he said.

In a separate case, a man was hijacked of the Toyota Quantum in which he was travelling by a gang of hijackers, at about 12.20pm on Friday, last week.

The man was driving along the N17 highway, near the Dalpark Toll Plaza, when he was forced to stop the vehicle after two cars, both white Toyota Corollas, came to a sudden stop in front of him.

Three men, two of whom were armed with guns, alighted the vehicles and got into the Quantum.

They drove off with the man, and later dropped him off in Slovoville, Soweto.
