Council meeting postponed

The meeting was originally planned for last week.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality will convene its first council meeting tomorrow (Tuesday),  where it is expected to elect a mayor and speaker.

The council meeting was originally planned for last week.

The city manager will preside over the commencement of council until the election of the speaker.

Thereafter a newly elected speaker will preside over council and oversee the election of the mayor and the chief whip.

In the meanwhile, the DA in Ekurhuleni has decided to publicly challenge all opposition parties, including the AIC, to unseat the ANC from power.

“If elected speaker and executive mayor in Ekurhuleni the DA will provide all elected councillors of the opposition parties a role on the mayoral committee and/or chair positions on oversight and standing committees,” said Ghaleb Cachalia, the DA’s mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni.

“The mayoral committee and chairs of committees comprise a total of 24 seats; the DA will occupy 11 positions (including mayor, speaker, finance and corporate and legal) and will invite all of the remaining parties to become part of the local government in Ekurhuleni.

“We would welcome comment on this public proposal from all concerned and affected parties – ideally to endorse it.”
