In the spotlight
Anathi Khumalo (13) is the junior head girl at Curro Helderwyk School.
The Alberton resident has made parents Namsa and Jabulani Khumalo extremely proud. Anathi has a sister called Zinhle and a brother named Musa.
• Did you expect to be selected as the head girl?
No, I did not expect it because there were a lot of learners who had great potential.
• What are your duties?
My duties as head girl are to represent the school as an ambassador, to listen and to satisfy other learners’ needs.
I also have to check if our leaders are doing their duties.
• What do you hope to achieve this year?
I really hope to achieve an academic award and the sportswoman award to inspire others.
• If you could be the principal for a day, what would you do?
If I could be the principal for one day, I would get parents involved in making decisions at the school.
I would create more variety in sport and find a way in which we could support the school clubs.
• What subject do you enjoy the most and why?
Maths is my favourite subject because it has a lot of challenges and problems, but there are many ways of solving the challenge and that is why I like it.
It relates to real life.
• Which is your least favourite subject and why?
I do not have a least favourite subject; I feel they all have a purpose in life.
• Do you play sport at school and do you think it is important for children to participate in sport?
Yes, children should participate in sport because they should stay active and fit.
• Do you think there is hope for the youth of our country?
Yes, because the youth are starting to recognise an opportunity that they should create jobs for themselves and employ others. This leads to the reduction of unemployment among the youth.
• What is your favourite television programme?
I have three favourite television programmes. They are Bull, CSI and S.W.A.T.
• Do you stay abreast of news events in the country and is it important to you?
Yes it is, because I get to learn about what is happening in our community and around us, and it makes me think of solutions that may help the economy.
• What goals would you like to achieve over the next few years?
I would like to learn how to play an instrument and become a professional singer.
• What do you want to be when you grow up?
I would like to become a chemical engineer as I enjoy experimenting with new things.
• If you had one wish that could come true, what would it be?
I wish world peace could come true because there is still a lot of fighting going on around the world.
• What is your favourite food?
Pizza is my favourite food because it has a lot of flavour and taste.
