Thinking about lying to or bribing police? Think again

Neither will be tolerated.

A man who lied to Brakpan police about being hijacked was arrested for perjury over the weekend.

Perjury, which is the wilful act of swearing a false oath, is a serious offence that will see offenders have a permanent criminal record.

A person who makes a false statement can be fined or sentenced to jail.

According to Brakpan police, the man came up with the lie in an attempt to cover up his own dubious dealings.

The man was caught out after it came to light that he was stealing diesel from his employer.

He works for a company in Mpumulanga.

After he met up with “buyers”, he accompanied them to a petrol station in Brakpan.

From there, the diesel was siphoned out and sold.

The man then refuelled the vehicle, which amounted to thousands of rand, but his petrol card was declined.

He then falsely reported that he had been hijacked.

Two others arrested over the weekend were motorists who tried to bribe their way out of trouble.

They too face the possibility of serving time in jail.

One was arrested for driving under the influence and the other for reckless and negligent driving.

Both tried to pay off the arresting officers and found themselves in heaps more trouble.

Local law enforcers have reiterated that bribery will not be tolerated.
