Brakpan 100: Royalty comes calling

In 1934, Prince George (later to become the Duke of Kent) visited the town.

The first royal visit to Brakpan was in 1925 when HRH the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VIII (who abdicated) visited South Africa.

Unfortunately, Brakpan people only had a glimpse of him, as he didn’t make a stop in the town – but residents turned out in force to wave as the car drove past.

In 1934, Prince George (later to become the Duke of Kent) visited the town and was asked by the mayor, Clr H Heyns, to cut a ribbon across Springs Road to rename it Prince George Avenue.

Prince George also inspected a guard of honour, comprising members of the Moths, in front of the town hall in Kitzinger Avenue.
