News of yesteryear

This week we look back at the Herald of October 8, 2004.

These were some of the local stories making headlines in years gone by.

• Celebration

A parade through a section of the Brakpan CBD last Saturday morning, exercised the right of Regiment Oos-Transvaal’s Freedom of the Town and also marked the 40th anniversary of the regiment.

Col C Lindsay took the salute of the parade, hosted by Lt Col TJ Stander, outside the old town hall buildings.

Ekurhuleni mayor Duma Nkosi inspected the Ceremonial Guard.

He also took the salute at the march past of the regiment’s Ceremonial Guard and Motorised Column.

Nkosi said it was a privilege to be part of this joyous event in the history of Regiment Oos-Transvaal.

Celebrations of the anniversary started on Friday night, last week, with a formal dinner at the Apex Military Base, attended by present and former military personnel and guests of honour.

Regiment Oos-Transvaal was established in October 1964 by Lt Col IH Crous.

On April 14, 1984, under the command of Lt Col C Prinsloo, it was awarded the Freedom of the Town of Brakpan by former Brakpan mayor Eric Holdtman.

• Thieves get away with 20 cash boxes

A cash-in-transit robbery took place at 11.30am on Monday in Dalpark Extension 11, and armed men stole at least 20 boxes containing cash.

According to Sgt Prudence Mvelase, spokesperson for the SAPS East Rand Areas Commissioner, a Pro-Active Assets Management vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla with three guards, collided head-on with a maroon BMW in Ouhout Street.

The BMW had two armed occupants.

A white bakkie with two more armed robbers stopped behind the vehicles.

The thieves robbed the security guards of their service pistols and about 20 boxes of cash.

They fled in the white bakkie.

About 600 metres from the scene, one box of cash fell off the bakkie.

The vehicle was found abandoned at the corner of Stormberg and Winterberg streets.

The two stolen vehicles recovered by police were stolen during July and September 2004 in Johannesburg.

One guard managed to flee without sustaining injury and the other two were taken to hospital to be treated.

The East Rand Murder and Robbery Unit is investigating.
