News of yesteryear

These were some of the local stories making headlines in years gone by. This week we look back at the Herald of October 26, 2007:

• SAPS ‘takes back’ town from criminals

Members of the Brakpan SAPS were recently out in full force in a well organised special duty operation to eradicate drugs and illegal immigrants from town.

Officers concentrated on problem areas Dalpark Extension Six and Brakpan Central early on Wednesday, last week, and continued working throughout the night.

Local police have established that Dalpark Ext Six is an escape route for many criminals in Brakpan.

There is also an informal settlement nearby that harbours illegal immigrants.

Police patrolled the streets and conducted a stop-and-search operation in the area.

Accompanied by members of the East Rand Crime Combatting Unit, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department Canine Unit, immigration officers from the South African Home Affairs Department and Correctional Services, the SAPS later that night conducted more searches on motorists and pedestrians along High Street in town.

This area, which is very close to the police station, is full of drugs.

Police later turned their attention to suspicious properties – mostly houses and boarding rooms – at locations along Gardiner Avenue, Derby Road and Station Road.

Narcotic sniffer dogs explored these properties, while police searched every room, cupboard, and in some cases, even the ceilings of the buildings.

The operation was successful and 42 illegal immigrants were arrested.

Other arrests made were for possession of drugs, drunk driving, drunk in public and possession of stolen property.

Seven cocaine bullets, 10 ecstasy tablets, two grams of dagga and CAT powder were confiscated.

• Dog Unit seizes drugs

Members of the North East Rand Dog Unit recently recovered drugs with a street value of more than R2 000 in Brakpan.

A clear plastic bag containing 19 ecstasy tablets, seven quantities of CAT powder and 11 bags of dagga were confiscated by the unit from an address along Hamilton Avenue.
