WATCH: Emergency services tackle gas pipeline fire during simulation

Traffic was affected as a result.

Fire and rescue services personnel were put to the test this morning (Tuesday) during a gas pipeline fire simulation in Denne Road, Vulcania.

Organised by Sasol, the simulation was aimed at testing the response time of emergency services and Sasol staff to a major incident.

Such hazardous incidents are a reality, the most recent of which occurred in Alberton in December, last year, when a gas pipeline caught fire and the area was evacuated.

Sasol staff, Brakpan SAPS, EMPD and Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services personnel participated in the simulation, which began around 9am.

A gas fire was started and the incident was then reported.

First responders arrived and a large stretch of Denne Road and the surrounding area was cordoned off.

Traffic was affected as a result.

Three fire engines were utilised and firefighters got to work dousing the fire.

A simulated patient was also rescued from the scene.
