Informal settlement residents demand police protection following deadly attack

They set 19 shacks alight and the bodies of two men were found burnt beyond recognition

A group of around 70 residents from the Magaleni informal settlement in Brakpan North descended upon the Brakpan Police Station this morning to demand police protection following a deadly attack in the informal settlement which resulted in the death of two men.

According to information received from local police, a large group of armed men attacked two sections of the informal settlement around 6pm last night (Tuesday).

They set 19 shacks alight and the bodies of two men were found burnt beyond recognition.

Police also found numerous bullet cartridges at the scene.

This is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have occurred recently in the informal settlement.

The Herald reported in an article published online today (Two killed in two days) how two bodies were discovered in the informal settlement in just two days.

The victims’ bodies were found on Sunday and Monday.

Brakpan Police Station management, who are currently engaging with the concerned residents, told the Herald they would monitor the situation.
