Weekend crime round-up

A case of common robbery is under investigation after two men wearing reflective police jackets forced a pedestrian into their vehicle and took him to an ATM where they withdrew cash from his bank account.

According to information received, the following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

• Friday – Two business along Wenden Avenue were targeted by burglars in separate incidents.
A gas bottle, a sound system, liquor and other items were stolen. A suspect was arrested in connection with one of the burglaries and some of the stolen items were recovered.

* A Leachville man was robbed of his vehicle in the driveway of his New Kleinfontein Road home.

The victim arrived home at 9.30pm and was confronted by two men as he stopped in front of the gate. One of the men pulled him out of the car, a silver Audi A4, while the other threatened him with a firearm.

They searched the victim and took his wallet. The hijackers then climbed into the Audi and drove off.

• Saturday – A case of common robbery is under investigation after two men wearing reflective police jackets forced a pedestrian into their vehicle and took him to an ATM where they withdrew cash from his bank account.
The victim was walking to work along the R23 (Heidelberg Road) near Carnival City at 5.30am when the pair pulled up alongside him.

They both climbed out of the car and approached him, demanding to know why he was walking along a national road.

He told them he knew pedestrians are not allowed on the highway and insisted he was not in the wrong for walking along this route.

They forced him into the car and took him to an ATM in Voortrekker Road where they demanded his bank card and the PIN.

One of the men went to withdraw the cash while the other stayed in the vehicle with the victim.
When the man returned to the car, he took the victim’s cellphone and increased his daily withdrawal limit on his banking app.

He then went back to the ATM and withdrew more cash. The victim was dropped off in Airport Road, Dalpark.

* A man was robbed along Hospital Road in Brakpan North by the occupants of an unidentified red vehicle.
The victim was waiting for a taxi to Benoni around 4pm when he was joined by a woman who also claimed to be waiting for transport.

A red car pulled up and the woman told the victim she knew the occupants.

She encouraged the victim to get into the car, telling him they were her friends and they would drive him to Benoni. The woman then grabbed the victim’s bag, containing his valuables, and handed it to a man in the front seat.

They took the victim’s cellphone and R30.

A case of common robbery is under investigation.

* Various household items, including a music system and a TV, were stolen during a burglary at a home in Ajax Street, Dalview.

Three motorbikes were also stolen from the address and a car parked on the property was broken into.

• Sunday – A white Nissan 1400 bakkie was stolen from the corner of Kitzinger Avenue and Park Street.

* A white Nissan NP200 bakkie was stolen from an address along Van Zyl Street in Brenthurst.
