Initially acquitted of all charges, justice has finally caught up with Tokologo Mbonani.
The 23-year-old was recently sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for murder and three years for theft.
Mbonani was charged with the kidnapping, murder, robbery and rape of Yvonne Fikile Sibeko, but was acquitted in 2018 after the court found the State did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt he had killed, raped and robbed her.
Sibeko was assaulted and stabbed in Brakpan in March 2017.

Her body was placed in a shallow grave and her cellphone was stolen.
According to Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS, Mbonani cooperated with police and pointed out Sibeko’s body in a veld.
“The body of the deceased was found lying naked and parts of her body were burned,” she said.
Following Mbonani’s acquittal, the matter was appealed by the National Prosecuting Authority and after successfully reserving a question of law to the Supreme Court of Appeal, Mbonani was convicted of murder and theft.
