Weekend crime round-up

Three women were robbed of their belongings after boarding a taxi along Elsburg Road near Carnival City.

According to information received, the following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

• Friday – Staff and customers at a business in Van Dyk Road, Dalpark, were held at gunpoint by two balaclava-clad robbers.

The incident took place at 12:00. One victim was robbed of his cellphone and house and car keys. In addition to taking this victim’s vehicle, the robbers also made off with bags of copper, aluminium and other valuables.
* A business in Victoria Avenue was burgled of a computer, a printer and cash till containing R650.

• Saturday – Two men were arrested in Brenthurst after they were found in possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.
The vehicle, a silver Mercedes-Benz which was hijacked in Hartbeespoort in May, is also suspected to have been used in the commission of hijackings.

Following up on information received, police arrived along Shepstone Street at around 12.50 and found two men standing by the car. Investigations confirmed the vehicle had been hijacked and the pair were arrested.

• Sunday – Three women were robbed of their belongings after boarding a taxi along Elsburg Road near Carnival City.

The trio boarded the taxi with five male occupants at 15.30. They had driven off when four of the men leapt to the back of the taxi where the victims were sitting and threatened them at gunpoint. The victims were instructed to lie down and were searched.

Their handbags were also searched. Among the goods stolen were a cellphone valued at R5 000, cash and a bank card. Money was also withdrawn from the bank account of one of the victims.

The women were dropped off at an unnamed cemetery and the taxi drove off.  A case of armed robbery is under investigation.
