Suspected zama zamas nabbed with explosives in Brakpan North
The area around the vehicle was cordoned off and the SAPS Bomb Squad was alerted.
Two foreign nationals were arrested by police in Brakpan North yesterday (Thursday) after they were found in possession of explosives and detonators.
According to information received from Brakpan police, Const LJ Pretorius and his crew from the Ekurhuleni District Operational Task Team were conducting patrol duties in the Brakpan area when at around 10:00 they spotted a suspicious-looking white Mazda Drifter with five occupants.
The driver of the vehicle skipped a stop sign along Hospital Road in Brakpan North and police pulled the vehicle over.
The occupants jumped out of the vehicle and started to run, but SAPS members managed to apprehend the driver and a passenger.
A search of the vehicle yielded 10 explosive devices, known as polony sticks, which measure approximately 15cm in length, and 16 detonator explosives with detonators attached.
The area around the vehicle was cordoned off and the SAPS Bomb Squad was alerted. The arrested duo live at an address in Payneville, Springs.
Police told the Herald the men are suspected to be illegal miners who operate at the Van Ryn Mine in Benoni. They were detained at the Brakpan Police Station and the vehicle was impounded at the SAPS Van Ryn Deep Vehicle Pound.
