How to log a call to the municipality’s call centre

Life-threatening calls relate to the threat of loss of life and/or limb.

The City of Ekurhuleni head of customer relations management, Lesego Sentsho, shared important points for residents to take note of when logging a call to the centre.

It is important to note the following:
• State your name in full (spell it out if possible)
• State your address and nearest crossroad (spell it out if possible)
• State the suburb and town where the incident is
• State and mention nearest landmark
• Give the main reason you need help (what is wrong) – such as no water/electricity or blocked sewer
• Do not hang up the phone first, wait for the operator to finish
• Always give as much information as possible to the operator
• Make sure you get a reference number

Sentsho explained that life-threatening calls relate to the threat of loss of life and/or limb. This means that there is an immediate danger such as motorcar accident, gunshot wound, fire or disaster.

Non-life threatening calls are always service-related, such as service interruptions like no water or power, burst pipes or potholes.

“Please keep your cellphone close by after logging a call in case the call centre needs to make contact,” said Sentsho.
