Brakpan SPCA tackles chicken welfare concerns in Tsakani
Warnings and compliance notices have been issued following an SPCA inspection of chicken hawking sites in Tsakani, with a follow-up visit planned.
The Brakpan SPCA recently visited chicken hawking sites in Tsakani, where they found several chickens that lacked sufficient potable water, while others were suffering in overcrowded conditions.
Cadet inspector for the local society, Mpumi Mthembu was accompanied by inspector Nkosi Sibiya from the Boksburg SPCA.
They immediately stepped in to assist the chickens by providing fresh water. Overcrowded chickens were also safely transferred into empty cages.
In addition, owners were educated on proper animal care, and official notices to comply and warnings were issued.
A second inspection will be conducted to ensure these standards are maintained and the animals receive lasting care.
The Brakpan SPCA extends its deepest gratitude to the Boksburg SPCA for allowing Nkosi to assist, and for spending time with Mthembu, giving him first-class, hands-on training in the field.
While every action counts towards a better life for these animals, the Brakpan SPCA cannot keep its inspectorate vehicle on the road or continue this life-saving work without the community’s support.
