All animals deserve to be treated with care

The owner was issued a warning in terms of the Animals Protection Act no 71 of 1962 and also to ensure his transportation is adequate for further use.

The transportation of farm animals must comply with the rules set out by the South African Bureau of Standards and cannot be in contravention of the Animal Protection Act.

This is a reminder from the Brakpan SPCA, who recently responded to a call about a trailer that lost its wheel along Heidelberg Road (R23) towards Carnival City.

“On the trailer was a large male pig. When we arrived, we found him overheating and dehydrated. We gave him water to drink, as well as to cool him off while we waited for the owner to come to the scene,” said Brakpan SPCA manager Tamaryn Lombard.

The owner was issued a warning in terms of the Animals Protection Act no 71 of 1962 and to ensure his transportation is adequate for further use.

“The owner brought a second trailer to where the pig was transferred and taken back to the farm,” explained Lombard.

“We assisted the owner with details of the state vet to assist him with his farm animals, and we have taken his information to do a follow-up inspection.

“These animals deserve to be treated with dignity and all the care and love we can offer.

“Just because they will be headed to the abattoir to be slaughtered for human consumption does not mean they may be treated poorly.”
