CCC Brakpan Rugby Club impressive despite weather
Win over the weekend boosts rugby club's confidence.
The conditions on Saturday were far from ideal for a great rugby match. The wet and cold weather meant it was going to be tough for both the players and supporters who braved the conditions.
CCC Brakpan Rugby Club, however, still showed they can be a major threat in the Valke Peregrine League by beating East Rand United 23-3 at Bosman Stadium.
This was the first time they beat United since 2016 and the first time they had ever stopped them from scoring tries.
Anrich Richter and Divan Brooderyk each scored a try, with the former converting both. Richter kicked over two penalties and PJ Beukes got one over the post.
“It was a good day. I think our forwards did very well,” said Brakpan’s chairperson, Harry Nieuwenhuis.
The forwards were the major concern for Brakpan in matches before the weekend, as there had been several injuries before.
“We had struggled with our scrumming and lineouts the week before, but that is sorted now,” said the chairperson.
United has been known to be strong, as they were the last club to represent the region in the Gold Cup in 2019.
They were also coming off a win after they beat Boksburg the week before.
“It’s a good win. They beat us the last three times. So it’s nice for us,” said Nieuwenhuis.
“Atrocious weather, difficult to get a running game going. But it was like that for both sides, so we can’t complain. It’s a good win.”

The victory will be a great confidence booster for Brakpan, who will be playing in the Heritage Tournament in Pretoria over the Easter Weekend.
They will be playing three matches against Witbank, Pretoria and the Wolverines at Loftus Versveld.
“It’s big games over five days. It’s going to be hectic, but I think this win will take us forward nicely in terms of the weekend,” said Nieuwenhuis.
Brakpan will have a squad of 50 players over the weekend, which will be useful in terms of managing players with so many matches in such a short time.
“We can have three teams available for the specific games,” he said.
