Waner nominated for humanitarian award

Residents can help Yakima bag the honour by voting.

Yakima Waner, founder and chairperson of The Harvest Project NPO in Brakpan, has been nominated for the Bertie Lubner Humanitarian Award.

Winning the award may bring new possibilities to the organisation and all those it helps through various projects and institutions, including The Harvest Centre of Judaism and Equality, Brakpan Shul, Blessings Eco Preparatory School, The United Hebrew Institute of Brakpan, The Harvest Animal Rescue, The Harvest Ekaya Project and The Edie and Colman Waner Feeding Scheme.

“We teach all our children, who we uplift through harvesting their own food, how we are all equal,” said Waner.

“We accept children of all backgrounds and teach them to celebrate each other’s cultures, faiths and languages.”

The Bertie Lubner Humanitarian Award is in honour of chief rabbi Cyril Harris.

It is awarded to a Jewish or non-Jewish person who has contributed substantially to the betterment of the lives of the people of South Africa.
