Brakpan Ward 105 councillor Annette Verster and Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads, Transport and Infrastructure, Mabekenyane Thamahane recently visited Dirk van der Hoff Street in Rand Collieries.
The purpose of the site visit was to showcase the urgency around the need to resurface the road.
“This has been a longstanding issue in the ward and has been ignored in the previous administration, despite numerous reports from myself as the ward councillor,” said Verster.
Issues identified from the site visit include:
• The water level is too high in the area. The water needs to be diverted to the pond/ dam down the road.
• There is an underground gas pipeline from Sasol across the road, where the potholes are located. The department is not allowed to work on the road without the assistance of Sasol as they need to secure the gas line before work commences.
The department has sent numerous emails to Sasol about this issue and this has delayed numerous attempts to resurface the road and repair potholes.
• It is estimated that the road will be fixed by the latest by February 2023.
“As a temporary measure, the Department of Roads and Stormwater will fill the holes with gravel,” said Verster.
“This is only an interim solution until we can get the road fixed.”
