As 2023 is well underway, local football clubs have wasted little time in getting back into action. The Brakpan Football League (BFL) played on Sunday at the Mkhancwa Grounds.
In their first game of the season, last year’s champions, Leachville Shooters, was taking on Kalawa FC.
This match saw the title holders emerging 2-0 victors, despite referee Jabulani Munene giving striker Prince Mtsweni his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
The red card came to him before halftime but Shooters were still too strong for Kalawa.

The second game of the day saw Anzac Dolphins crush Super Eagles 3-0.
Dolphins has been producing several talented young players in recent years. This development was on display in the way they dominated their opponents.
The new club, Golden Sparrows, beat Mgongo 1-0 after the latter was reduced to 10 men. Mgongo’s Mzwandile Ntsojale received his marching orders for unsporting behaviour.
The second match in the BFL season started with six goals, which will impress the fans.
“The league has progressed from the first season in 2021,” said official Munene.
The seniors’ season, which ends in June, is now underway while the juniors kick off later this month. The juniors’ season runs until October.
While the league for Brakpan’s clubs is huge, with a lot of pride on the line, many of them will use these matches to prepare for the Easterns Local Football Association (ELFA) season which starts in March.
This weekend’s matches will see Mgongo taking on the Dolphins. Then the Super Eagles will aim to get on the winning path, following their loss to the Dolphins. They take on Stone Breakers on Sunday.
Leachville Shooters will take on the Sparrows in what will be a big test for the latter who are newcomers to the league.
