San Michele in crisis with water supply difficulties

San Michele Home appeals for donations of water.

The San Michele Home, an organisation in Withok Estates that accommodates intellectually and physically disabled people, has experienced water pressure problems since January 18 because load-shedding has affected the water supply.

Marius Bosman, the home’s centre manager, said their water supply was cut off on January 29.

Since the start of the troubles, the home has used various avenues to contact the City of Ekurhuleni with little success.

After the water access was cut, contact was successfully made with the city, which supplied the home with 60 000l of water.

However, water consumption there can be up to 70 000l a day.

The supply given by the city drastically falls short, and the home has had to rely on donations from people or organisations in the Brakpan, Springs and Boksburg areas.

They only have enough water for cooking and drinking. As such, hygiene has suffered.

Intensive care patients require daily laundry services, which cannot be rendered because of the water shortage.

As a result, the health of patients is at risk. The facility has 225 people in its care, 60 of whom are intensive care patients.

The home is frustrated by the situation and desperately needs as much water as possible.

They appeal to residents to donate clean water for human consumption. Donations can be dropped off at 266 Hannes Visagie Street.
